Common mistakes when booking a hotel (and how to avoid them)

Booking a hotel seems simple. A few clicks, some nice photos, and you’re done.
But in practice, many travelers repeat the same mistakes and only realize it when they are already there, with their suitcase in hand and expectations that are not met.

We reviewed some of the most common mistakes when booking a hotel… and how to avoid them.

1. Choosing based on price alone

This is one of the most frequent mistakes. Looking only for the lowest price without checking what is included in the stay often leads to surprises: uncomfortable rooms, inconvenient locations, or services that were not expected.

Price is important, of course. But the real value is in what you get in return. At HTL, we believe that a good stay is one where everything flows: rest, space, location, and service.

2. Relying only on photos

It’s happened to all of us: spectacular photos that later have nothing to do with reality. Misleading angles, old images, or details that are not shown.

So, in addition to looking at the photos, it is essential to:

read recent reviews

understand exactly what type of room you are booking

know what services are included

At HTL, what you see is what you get. No surprises.

3. Not paying attention to location

A hotel may be beautiful, but if it is poorly located for your travel plans, everything becomes complicated. Long transfers, poorly connected areas, or far from what you want to do.

Before booking, it is a good idea to ask yourself:
👉 Am I traveling for work, tourism, or leisure?
👉 Do I want to get around on foot?
👉 What is nearby?

Location is part of the experience, it’s not a minor detail.

4. Not thinking about the type of trip

Traveling alone, as a couple, with friends, or with family is not the same thing. However, we often book a hotel without taking this into account.

Space, comfort, schedules, services, and flexibility change according to the plan. At HTL, we design each stay to suit the trip, not the other way around.

5. Leaving the decision to the last minute without criteria

Booking at the last minute may work in some cases, but it often means giving up the most important thing: choice. When you wait too long, you end up choosing what’s left, not what you really wanted.

Choosing in advance allows you to compare, think, and decide better.

6. Not reading other guests’ experiences

Reviews say much more than any description. Ignoring them means missing out on important information about cleanliness, service, rest, and overall experience.

High ratings don’t appear by chance: they reflect processes, teams, and a consistent way of working.

Avoiding these mistakes helps ensure that your stay goes according to plan, rather than complicating it. And when everything is designed to work well from day one, traveling becomes much more enjoyable.

At HTL, we believe that staying well is also part of the trip.
And that choosing well makes all the difference.
